PHNOM PENH, April 1, 2026 (KPT) — Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has partnered with Cambodia to develop a skilled workforce for the fast growing EV sector, officials said Wednesday, as global fuel prices continue to climb.

Labour Minister Heng Sour met with Ye Chenghui, BYD Cambodia’s Head of Sales and Asia Pacific Regional Sales Director, to discuss opportunities for training young people in advanced EV skills.

The talks come as Cambodia recently announced sweeping tax exemptions on electric vehicles and related equipment, a move experts say will accelerate adoption amid rising energy costs.

Minister Sour praised BYD’s contribution to green economic development, human resource training and job creation, noting the company’s presence boosts confidence in Cambodia’s EV market while offering citizens access to affordable, high tech vehicles. He stressed the government’s full support for BYD operations, encouraging ministries and institutions to facilitate the company’s success.

The import taxes on EVs for personal use have been fully exempted to encourage investment and adoption. Rising demand for BYD vehicles has created opportunities in assembly, importation and expansion, making workforce training a timely priority.

Chenghui expressed gratitude to the government for its support, outlining BYD’s operational progress and future strategy in Cambodia. He said the company remains focused on environmental sustainability while providing modern and affordable EV options.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to long term cooperation, including plans for training centers, internships and study visits to production facilities.

According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Cambodia had registered 14,534 electric vehicles by February 2026, including 10,363 cars, 3,449 motorcycles and 722 three wheelers.
