Angelina Jolie eyes revival of Battambang’s historic cinemas
BATTAMBANG, April 2, 2026 (KPT) – Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is exploring efforts to help restore two of Battambang’s historic cultural landmarks, underscoring renewed attention to Cambodia’s artistic heritage and preservation needs, officials said Thursday.
During a visit to the province, Jolie inspected the Prasat Meas Theatre and a historic cinema in Battambang city – venues dating back to the 1960s that have fallen into disrepair. The visit was organized by the Phare Ponleu Selpak Association, a leading Cambodian arts group that has called for support to rehabilitate the sites. She was joined by Battambang Governor Sok Lou, provincial officials and representatives from the Department of Culture and Fine Arts.

Officials said the inspection aimed to assess the condition of the buildings and explore pathways for restoration, with the goal of preserving their cultural value for future generations. The initiative highlights growing interest in safeguarding Cambodia’s cultural heritage at both local and national levels.
The visit follows Jolie’s recent trip to Samlout High School, where she observed education facilities, reflecting her continued commitment to humanitarian and cultural initiatives in Cambodia. Her ties to the country stretch back more than two decades, beginning with the filming of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2000. She adopted her son Maddox in 2002, was granted Cambodian citizenship in 2005, and later founded the Maddox Jolie Pitt Foundation in Samlout district, focusing on conservation, health and livelihoods.
Recent reports suggest the 51 year old actress has listed her Los Angeles home for sale, fueling speculation she may relocate to Cambodia as her youngest children near adulthood.
