KAMPONG SPEU, April 6, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has revived its traditional ox cart racing festival as part of efforts to preserve cultural heritage and boost tourism ahead of the Khmer New Year, officials said Monday.

Organized by the provincial Department of Culture and Fine Arts with local authorities and the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia, the 2026 event brought together communities, cultural practitioners and visitors in Kampong Speu province.

Presided over by Governor Cheam Chan Sophoan, the festival served as a prelude to the Khmer New Year, celebrated annually from April 14 to 16. A total of 80 ox cart teams competed, showcasing a long-standing rural tradition that reflects the ingenuity and identity of the Khmer people.

Officials said the event aims to safeguard intangible cultural heritage and inspire younger generations to protect Cambodia’s traditions. It also encourages participation from public institutions, the private sector and local communities in promoting national arts and culture.

Beyond its cultural significance, the festival plays a role in stimulating tourism by creating a festive atmosphere and attracting visitors to Kampong Speu during the holiday season. Authorities said such events highlight Cambodia’s rich heritage while supporting sustainable tourism and community engagement.
