Cambodia’s Kampong Speu to Host Traditional Ox Cart Racing Festival Ahead of Khmer New Year
KAMPONG SPEU, Mar. 10, 2026 (KPT) — Authorities in Kampong Speu Province will stage the traditional ox cart racing festival next month as part of efforts to preserve Cambodia’s rural heritage and promote cultural tourism ahead of the Khmer New Year, officials said Tuesday.
The provincial Department of Culture and Fine Arts announced the event will take place on April 5 in Sloa 1 Village, Roka Thom Commune, Chbar Mon City. It is being organized in cooperation with the provincial administration, the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia, the Chbar Mon city administration, and the Kampong Speu Ox Cart Racing Association.

Officials said the festival aims to safeguard and promote a tradition passed down through generations, while drawing spectators from across the province and beyond. Historically, ox carts were used to transport goods and family members during weddings and ceremonies, later evolving into festive races to celebrate the New Year.
Today, the races have become a unique cultural showcase, highlighting community spirit and rural identity while attracting public interest and tourism. Organizers said the 2026 edition is expected to draw large crowds and reinforce Kampong Speu’s role in preserving Cambodia’s intangible heritage.
