Cambodia Expands GI Portfolio to Boost Global Recognition of Local Products
PHNOM PENH, April 27, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has expanded its portfolio of Geographical Indication (GI) products with the official registration of four additional local specialties, marking a significant step toward strengthening the global recognition of Cambodian goods, officials said Monday.
The Ministry of Commerce announced that Phnom Srok Golden Silk, Koh Kong Mud Crab, Kampong Thom Cashew Nut and Oddar Meanchey Mango have been granted GI status, underscoring their unique qualities tied to specific geographic origins and traditional production methods.

The registrations reflect Cambodia’s growing efforts to elevate national identity through high value agricultural and artisanal goods while protecting the intellectual property rights of local producer communities. GI recognition helps prevent imitation and misuse of product names, while preserving traditional knowledge and supporting environmentally sustainable practices.
The designation also enhances market value and opens opportunities for these products to access international markets under recognized quality standards. Cambodia already counts Kampot Pepper and Kampong Speu Palm Sugar among its internationally recognized GI products.
The expansion is expected to contribute to rural economic development, promote tourism linked to local specialties and strengthen Cambodia’s competitiveness in the global marketplace, officials added.
