SIEM REAP, June 2, 2026 (KPT) — International experts have begun inspecting major restoration projects at Angkor as Cambodia prepares to host the 42nd Technical Session of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC) next week.

The APSARA National Authority (ANA) said the Ad Hoc Expert Group launched its program on June 1 with visits to Bakong, Banteay Samre and Ta Prohm temples. Conservation teams presented updates on restoration progress, technical methods and challenges, while experts offered recommendations to strengthen preservation quality and ensure compliance with global heritage standards.

The inspections form part of preparations for the ICC’s 42nd Technical Session on the management, conservation and sustainable development of Angkor, scheduled for June 9–10 in Siem Reap.

Officials said findings from the site assessments will guide future conservation strategies and reinforce international cooperation in safeguarding Cambodia’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Angkor and Sambor Prei Kuk.

The ICC, co‑chaired by France and Japan with UNESCO as coordinator, has overseen Angkor’s preservation since the site was listed as World Heritage in 1992. The technical sessions bring together international experts, donors and Cambodian authorities to review progress, share best practices and set priorities for future restoration.

ANA stressed that the inspections highlight Cambodia’s commitment to balancing heritage conservation with sustainable tourism, ensuring Angkor remains both a cultural treasure and a driver of local development.
