PM Hun Manet Promotes Community‑Based Eco‑Tourism Through Knong Psar Green Retreat
KAMPONG SPEU, June 2, 2026 (KPT) — Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has highlighted Cambodia’s drive to expand community‑based eco‑tourism following the completion of Phase 1 of the Knong Psar Green Retreat Project, a flagship initiative designed to boost local livelihoods while safeguarding the environment.
The Prime Minister’s private visit to Knong Psar, a popular trekking and camping destination in Kampong Speu province, drew public attention after residents shared images of him driving to the site and meeting community members.

In a social media post, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet confirmed that the Ministry of Environment had completed the first phase of the project, fulfilling commitments made during his earlier visit in March 2025.
“The project aims to improve community services and enable local residents to directly manage tourism facilities and share economic benefits more effectively,” he said.
The development strengthens community ownership of tourism activities and creates new opportunities for local businesses. A newly established market allows residents to showcase and sell local products, helping raise household incomes. The initiative is expected to directly benefit 118 families while contributing to Kampong Speu’s tourism growth.
Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth said the project was carried out under the Prime Minister’s directive to ensure tourism development remains linked with environmental protection, cultural preservation and community welfare. Authorities were instructed to maintain the area’s natural landscape and Khmer identity throughout construction.
Located in Oral district, the project includes an entrance gate, public restrooms, parking facilities, landscaped gardens, a community market, café, tourist information center, first‑aid station and resting areas. All Phase 1 facilities are now complete and ready for visitors.
The Knong Psar initiative is part of Cambodia’s broader strategy to expand sustainable tourism and strengthen local economies through community‑led conservation. The Ministry of Environment said the project is helping shift communities away from illegal logging and wildlife hunting toward eco‑tourism entrepreneurship and resource stewardship.
Known for its mountain landscapes, cloud‑covered viewpoints and camping experiences, Knong Psar has quickly emerged as one of Cambodia’s fastest‑growing eco‑tourism destinations.
