PHNOM PENH, June 3, 2026 (KPT) — Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has pledged that Cambodia’s eco‑tourism projects in Kampong Speu province will prioritize local communities and environmental preservation rather than large‑scale development that could harm livelihoods.

At a ceremony inaugurating a new building at the National Institute of Physical Education and Sports, the premier said the government would not allow projects that negatively affect residents in natural areas such as Knong Phsar.

He emphasized that the approach focuses on improving accessibility and services while ensuring local people benefit directly from tourism activities and income opportunities.

Tourists and residents were urged to help protect Cambodia’s natural environment by keeping eco‑tourism sites clean. Samdech Thipadei stressed that preserving natural beauty is essential to sustain growth and attract more domestic and international travelers.

The prime minister highlighted ongoing efforts to expand community‑based eco‑tourism following completion of Phase 1 of the Knong Psar Green Retreat Project. Designed to improve community services, the initiative enables residents to manage facilities and share economic benefits.

Officials said the project has strengthened community ownership and created new opportunities for local businesses. A newly established market now allows residents to showcase and sell products, helping raise household incomes. Authorities estimate the project will directly benefit about 118 families while contributing to Kampong Speu’s tourism growth.

Cambodia’s eco‑tourism sector has expanded rapidly in recent years, with more than 120 officially recognized community‑based tourism sites nationwide. These destinations, ranging from forest retreats in the Cardamom Mountains to mangrove conservation zones in Koh Kong, are managed by local communities to ensure profits stay within villages while protecting biodiversity.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said Cambodia’s eco‑tourism strategy aims to balance development with conservation, keeping communities at the heart of tourism expansion.
