Cambodian Ancient Art Showcased at Major Australian Museum Exhibition
SYDNEY, June 23, 2026 (KPT) — Ancient Khmer sculptures and paintings are taking center stage at one of Australia’s leading museums, offering international audiences a rare glimpse into Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage, officials said Tuesday.
Nine artifacts — six stone sculptures and three paintings depicting scenes from the Reamker epic — are featured in the “Avatars of Vishnu” exhibition at the New South Wales Art Gallery in Sydney. The works were loaned by the National Museum of Cambodia and Battambang Provincial Museum.

Highlights include a ninth‑century Vishnu sculpture in the Phnom Kulen style, a Garuda in the Banteay Srei style from the Angkor period, a Kalkin sculpture dating to the sixth–seventh centuries, and Reamker paintings created between the late 19th and early 20th century.
Muong Chanraksmey of Cambodia’s Department of Museums said the exhibition showcases Khmer interpretations of Vishnu’s avatars, reflecting artistic developments across pre‑Angkorian, Angkorian and post‑Angkorian periods. “It is an opportunity to promote Khmer art and present its evolution from the earliest periods to the present day,” he said, adding that the display also strengthens cultural ties between Cambodia and Australia.
Chanraksmey noted that preparations to bring the artifacts to Sydney involved conservation assessments, packaging, transport logistics and strict exhibition environment requirements. The process took more than a year and required close collaboration among experts.
Speaking to Cambodian journalists visiting under a program organized by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, senior curator Melanie Eastburn said Khmer works bring unique perspectives to stories shared across cultures. “The same stories in the Khmer context have some unique differences, which makes it special to show that there are many ways of telling a story,” she said.
The exhibition features paintings, sculptures and religious objects from six countries, including Cambodia, Nepal and India. Opened on June 20, it will run until October 5, underscoring Cambodia’s growing role in global cultural exchanges.
