SOSORO Museum Launches Interactive Exhibition on Khmer–French Linguistic Heritage
PHNOM PENH, June 23, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Preah Srey Içanavarman Museum of Economy and Money (SOSORO) has unveiled a new interactive exhibition exploring the linguistic and cultural connections between Khmer and French, officials said Tuesday.
Titled “Angkêt de mots: When Khmer Meets French,” the exhibition was inaugurated on June 21 by National Bank of Cambodia Governor Dr. Chea Serey, with Deputy Prime Ministers Hang Chuon Naron and Sok Chenda Sophea, members of the Royal Family, diplomats and cultural representatives in attendance.

Developed with linguist Jean‑Michel Filippi, the exhibition traces how French‑origin words have been adopted, adapted and reinvented in Khmer over more than a century of exchanges. It also charts the evolution of French in Cambodia from the Protectorate era to its contemporary use.
Presented in Khmer and French, the display combines panels, archival materials, videos, games and immersive recreations inspired by the Sangkum period. Interactive installations allow visitors to test their knowledge, explore language formation and even join a Khmer–French karaoke experience.
“This exhibition is even more audiovisual, playful and interactive than our previous productions,” said Blaise Kilian, Co‑Director of SOSORO. An activity booklet for children is also available.
The exhibition contributes to Cambodia’s Francophonie year ahead of the 20th Francophonie Summit, underscoring enduring ties between the Kingdom and the Francophone community. Hosted in the former Bank of Indochina building, now part of the SOSORO complex, the exhibition is open to the public.
