Queen Mother marks International Women’s Day anniversary

PHNOM PENH, March 3 (KPT) – Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk has issued a message to mark the 115th anniversary of International Women’s Day on 8 March 2026, praising the role of women in advancing equality and contributing to Cambodia’s national development.
In a royal message released on 3 March by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, the Queen Mother paid tribute to the “heroism and struggles of women around the world” in advocating for rights, freedoms, democracy and equal treatment.
“On the celebration of this noble day, as every year, I would like to join in expressing congratulations in remembrance of the heroism and struggles of women around the world,” she said, stressing that equality between men and women is fundamental to ensuring women and girls can participate fully in development.
The ministry has chosen “Peace and Security for Women and Families” as the national theme for 2026, highlighting the importance of stability for women and families and underscoring women’s contributions to peacebuilding.
Officials said the theme also calls for measures to remove barriers affecting women and vulnerable groups.
The Queen Mother noted that the theme aligns with the global “Women, Peace and Security” agenda under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, which promotes women’s participation in peace processes and post-conflict recovery.
She said peace in Cambodia had been achieved through sustained efforts by national leaders and emphasized its importance in allowing citizens to live free of discrimination and exercise their rights.
She also commended women and girls across the country for their contributions to families, communities and the economy, including those serving in the security sector.
The Queen Mother expressed support for the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and other institutions working to advance gender equality.
The ministry said this year’s theme reflects wider global challenges, including armed conflict, climate change, natural disasters and violent extremism, which disproportionately affect women and vulnerable populations.
Cambodia has previously received international recognition for deploying female personnel in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
Government figures show women account for 21 percent of Cambodia’s peacekeeping forces, placing the country 14th among 120 contributors and second within ASEAN.
International Women’s Day is observed annually on 8 March in Cambodia and worldwide to celebrate progress towards gender equality and highlight ongoing challenges.
