Cambodia denies Thai media reports of border grenade fire

PHNOM PENH, Feb 24, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence has strongly denied reports in Thai media alleging that Cambodian forces fired a grenade near a Thai patrol point along the border in Preah Vihear province.

Spokeswoman Lieutenant General Maly Socheata said the claims, circulated on official Thai military pages and several outlets, were “false information” that risked creating misunderstandings and escalating tensions.

According to Cambodia’s 4th Military Region, liaison teams from both sides made immediate contact after reports of explosions and gunfire on the Thai side. Cambodian officials told their Thai counterparts that no weapons had been fired by Cambodian forces.

The ministry reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to respecting agreements, including the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee in December 2025 and the October 2025 peace declaration.

It stressed that both sides had pledged to counter fake news and uphold mechanisms designed to preserve stability along the frontier.

The ministry urged the public and media to rely only on official government sources and avoid spreading unverified information. It said Cambodia remains committed to restoring normalcy, peace, and long term security along the border.
