Cambodia Allows ASEAN Observers to Monitor Ceasefire Area
PHNOM PENH, Feb 6, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence said Friday it had facilitated a visit by ASEAN observers to assess conditions in a border area following the implementation of a ceasefire.
A ministry spokesperson, Ms.Maly Socheata, said the Cambodian Liaison Group escorted the ASEAN Observer Team to Chor 1 in Veal Veng district, Pursat province, at 09:00 local time. The team was tasked with observing, verifying and reporting on developments after the ceasefire took effect.
The ministry reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to fully respecting and implementing the ceasefire agreement, as well as related documents, including the October 26, 2025 Peace Declaration with Thailand and the Joint Statement of the third special meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee in December.
Separately, Cambodia lodged a formal protest against Thailand after Thai armed forces placed three shipping containers near a disputed border area, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.
The containers were installed on February 3 in An Seh village, Choam Ksan district, Preah Vihear province, in territory Phnom Penh insists lies within Cambodia’s sovereign borders. Officials said the move obstructed access to the An Seh International Border Checkpoint.
In a statement, Cambodia described the action as a violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity, warning it could alter the local security environment and consolidate military control.
Government spokesman Pen Bona reiterated Cambodia’s “consistent and unwavering” position, stressing disputes must be resolved peacefully and in line with international law, and rejecting any attempt to alter borders by force.
