Cambodia’s Senate president congratulates Brunei on National Day

PHNOM PENH, 21 February 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen has extended warm congratulations to Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei on the occasion of the sultanate’s National Day, underscoring the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two Southeast Asian nations.
In his message, Samdech Techo Hun Sen conveyed greetings on behalf of the Senate of Cambodia and the Cambodian people, highlighting the longstanding ties and mutual respect that have characterized relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992.
He expressed confidence that Cambodia and Brunei would continue to strengthen collaboration for shared prosperity, while wishing the Sultan good health and the Bruneian people lasting peace and progress.
Brunei marks its National Day annually on 23 February, commemorating independence from the United Kingdom in 1984.
Despite being one of the smallest nations in Southeast Asia by population, Brunei enjoys one of the region’s highest per capita incomes, driven largely by energy exports.
Both Cambodia and Brunei are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), where they have cooperated on initiatives ranging from regional integration to socio-economic development.
While bilateral trade remains modest compared with larger economies in the bloc, officials have pointed to opportunities in investment, tourism and energy cooperation.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who served as Cambodia’s prime minister for nearly four decades before assuming the Senate presidency, continues to play an active role in regional diplomacy.
Observers note that such congratulatory messages, though ceremonial, reflect Phnom Penh’s emphasis on maintaining stable ties within ASEAN amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
