Cambodia Protests Thai-Led Visit within Cambodian Territory

PHNOM PENH, Feb 4, 2026 (KPT)— Cambodia has lodged a formal protest with Thailand over what it says was an unauthorised visit by Thai military officials and foreign representatives to Cambodian territory near the border.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the visit took place on February 2 in O Smach district of Oddar Meanchey province and was led by the Thai army’s chief of intelligence.

The delegation included foreign military attachés and law enforcement officials, according to the statement.

Phnom Penh said the visit was carried out without its consent and therefore violated Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The ministry noted that the two hotels visited are located about 400 metres from the O Smach international checkpoint, close to the Thai border.

Cambodia accused Thailand of occupying the area by force following clashes between December 7 and 27, 2025.

It “categorically rejected” what it described as an illegitimate exercise of Thai authority, saying the visit breached international law, including the UN Charter and the ASEAN Charter, and amounted to an attempt to legitimise Thailand’s presence.

Despite the protest, the government said it remained committed to resolving border issues with Thailand and other neighbours through peaceful means and in line with international law. It reiterated its stance that borders must not be altered by force.
