Cambodia Backs ASEAN Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar at Philippines Meeting

PHNOM PENH, Jan 29, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has reaffirmed its support for the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus (5PC) on Myanmar during an Extended Informal Consultation (EIC) held in Cebu, the Philippines.

On January 28, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn attended the meeting at the invitation of Philippine Foreign Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro.

The consultation welcomed Lazaro’s appointment as ASEAN Special Envoy on Myanmar for 2026 and reiterated full backing for Manila’s efforts to advance implementation of the 5PC, following ASEAN leaders’ review last year.

Sokhonn stressed that the 5PC remains the main ASEAN framework for assisting Myanmar’s return to normalcy through a “Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned” political process.

He called for a timely reassessment of the plan to ensure its relevance and effectiveness, while underscoring the need for a credible and inclusive electoral process to secure long-term stability.

On the sidelines, Sokhonn held bilateral meetings with counterparts from Brunei, Vietnam and Malaysia.

With Brunei’s Second Foreign Minister Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof, he highlighted three decades of close ties and conveyed well wishes for Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s recovery from knee surgery.

In talks with Vietnam’s Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung, both sides reaffirmed principles of “Good Neighbourliness, Traditional Friendship, Comprehensive Cooperation, and Long-lasting Stability,” recalling the 21st Cambodia-Vietnam Joint Commission meeting in December and discussing an upcoming state visit by Vietnam’s Secretary General To Lam.

Meeting Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, Prak expressed appreciation for Kuala Lumpur’s role in facilitating a ceasefire and easing tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

Both ministers pledged to strengthen ties and prepare for the 3rd Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation later this year.

The ministers also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the latest developments along the Cambodia-Thailand frontier.
