PHNOM PENH, April 24, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has welcomed Myanmar’s release of more than 4,000 prisoners under a presidential amnesty, calling it a “positive step” toward dialogue and national reconciliation.

In a statement, the foreign ministry said the April 17 decision, coinciding with the Thingyan New Year, included the release of former president Win Myint and a partial reduction of Aung San Suu Kyi’s sentence.

Phnom Penh said the move was in line with ASEAN expectations and could help create a more favorable environment for peace efforts.

Cambodia expressed hope that further measures would follow to build trust and advance reconciliation, including progress toward a nationwide ceasefire.

Officials reaffirmed commitment to work with ASEAN partners under the charter and the Five Point Consensus to support an inclusive political process led by Myanmar’s people.

Myanmar’s military led authorities have announced a series of amnesties in recent weeks, describing them as gestures of reconciliation.

The United Nations welcomed the releases but stressed that thousands of political prisoners remain detained and urged broader steps toward dialogue.
