PHNOM PENH, May 22, 2026 (KPT) — ASEAN foreign ministers have renewed calls for constructive dialogue and an immediate halt to violence in Myanmar during an extended informal consultation held by videoconference on Thursday, Cambodia’s foreign ministry said.

Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, also Cambodia’s foreign minister, joined counterparts in stressing the importance of inclusive dialogue among all parties and the need to create conditions conducive to peace efforts.

Sokhonn reaffirmed Cambodia’s support for “open and frank consultations” and efforts to move forward in line with ASEAN’s core principles.

The meeting followed the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu earlier this month, where leaders agreed on the need to explore new approaches to Myanmar’s crisis amid frustration over stalled implementation of the bloc’s peace plan.

ASEAN’s response has centred on the Five‑Point Consensus, which calls for an immediate cessation of violence, dialogue among all parties, humanitarian aid and the appointment of a special envoy.

But progress has been limited, largely due to the military government’s failure to comply with its commitments.

Regional leaders are under growing pressure to reassess their strategy as conflict and instability continue across Myanmar, with the crisis threatening ASEAN’s credibility and unity.
