PHNOM PENH, Jan 23, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn met Canada’s newly appointed ambassador, Christian DesRoches, on Thursday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations.

Receiving the envoy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sokhonn congratulated him on his appointment and welcomed growing momentum in Cambodia–Canada ties.

He highlighted recent steps, including the elevation of Canada’s diplomatic presence to a full embassy, the opening of an honorary consulate in Siem Reap, rising two-way trade and exchanges of trade missions.

Sokhonn noted the successful first round of bilateral consultations in Ottawa in 2024 and said he looked forward to the second round, set for February in Phnom Penh.

Talks are expected to cover trade and investment, demining, consular affairs, tourism and preparations for the Francophonie Summit.

Ambassador DesRoches reaffirmed Canada’s support for Cambodia’s hosting of the 2026 Francophonie Summit and pledged to expand cooperation. He also exchanged views with Sokhonn on deepening ties for mutual benefit.

Sokhonn briefed the envoy on developments along the Cambodia–Thailand border and reiterated Phnom Penh’s commitment to maintaining a ceasefire.
