PHNOM PENH, Jan 20, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has scheduled its next Commune/Sangkat Council elections for June 6, 2027, according to a government directive signed by Prime Minister Hun Manet.

The order, issued January 19, instructs ministries and institutions including the Interior Ministry and the Council of Ministers to prepare for the polls, which form the grassroots tier of local administration.

The last Commune/Sangkat Council election was held on June 5, 2022, across more than 23,600 polling stations, with 17 parties contesting. The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won 9,376 seats, including 1,648 commune chief positions. The Candlelight Party secured four commune chiefs and more than 1,300 deputy posts, while FUNCINPEC won a handful of deputy positions.

Turnout in 2022 reached 80 percent, with over 7.3 million valid ballots cast. The CPP received 5.37 million votes, followed by the Candlelight Party with 1.61 million and FUNCINPEC with just over 9,000.

Officials have yet to announce campaign timelines or preparations, but the formal setting of the date marks the start of Cambodia’s 2027 local election cycle.
