Cambodia ratifies UN Law of the Sea convention
Phnom Penh, Jan 15, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s National Assembly has unanimously approved a law ratifying the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), formalising the country’s commitment to the 1982 treaty.
The decision was made during the 5th session of the 7th legislature, chaired by National Assembly President Khuon Sodary. Cambodia originally signed the convention on July 1, 1983.
The treaty, adopted in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and in force since November 1994, has 171 state parties, including all 10 ASEAN members.
It sets out the international legal framework for maritime boundaries, freedom of navigation, environmental protection and the management of marine resources.
Lawmakers said ratification would benefit Cambodia as a maritime nation by providing legal clarity for activities at sea, strengthening protection under international law and enhancing its role in global maritime cooperation.
It will also enable Cambodia to take part in the governance of international maritime authorities and courts.
