Cambodian Mine Action Authority Warns Returnees of Hidden UXO Threat

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 30, 2025) — As thousands of displaced Cambodians return home under a ceasefire, the Cambodian Mine Action Authority has issued an urgent warning about unexploded ordnance still scattered across former conflict zones.

The agency urged civilians to avoid areas suspected of containing landmines, cluster munitions or other explosive remnants of war. It stressed that people must not touch, move or tamper with suspicious objects and should report them immediately to local authorities or demining teams.

The warning comes as border provinces gradually reopen after weeks of fighting, with families returning to damaged villages where UXO risks remain high.

In its statement, the authority advised returnees to consult village and commune leaders as well as local police before entering affected areas. Mines and unexploded bombs, it said, can cause serious injury, permanent disability or death at any time.

Officials said UXO clearance will be a central part of rehabilitation efforts as Cambodia moves into recovery following the ceasefire.
