Cambodia seeks peace, border stability after China-hosted talks

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec.29, 2025) — Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn said peace, stability and a return to normal life along the border remain the country’s top priorities.
“What we need is peace and stability along the border, and a return to normalcy, both people-to-people and state-to-state,” Sokhonn said.
His remarks followed trilateral talks Dec. 28–29 at Fuxian Lake in Yunnan province, China. The meeting was chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and attended by Sokhonn and Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow.
Sokhonn emphasized the importance of restoring relations between Cambodia and Thailand, citing their long-standing geographical and historical ties.
“We are long-term neighbors and share a common border. That is why restoring peace and relations between our two countries is so significant,” he said.
He said the talks focused on strengthening implementation of previously agreed principles to ensure a peaceful resolution of the conflict and prevent further armed clashes.
Sokhonn added that China pledged support to maintain peace, including humanitarian assistance already delivered to Cambodia.
Sokhonn said Cambodia was prepared to receive 18 Cambodian soldiers following the cease-fire and expressed hope the situation would remain stable.
On the border dispute, he reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to resolving issues peacefully under international law, existing agreements and treaties, and maps dating back to the French colonial period.
He said ensuring the safe and dignified return of civilians was a priority, allowing displaced people to resume farming and other livelihoods.
The talks concluded with a joint statement in which Cambodia and Thailand outlined steps to consolidate the cease-fire, restore exchanges, rebuild political trust and improve long-term relations.
The three sides said the agreement served the long-term interests of both countries and sent a positive signal for regional peace and stability, calling dialogue and consultation an effective way to resolve complex disputes.
