China Pledges Support for Cambodia–Thailand Peace Efforts

KUNMING, China (Dec. 29, 2025) — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing will continue to support efforts to rebuild peace between Cambodia and Thailand and is prepared to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by the conflict, according to a statement released Sunday.
Wang, a member of the Communist Party of China’s Political Bureau, said China, as a neighbor and friend to both countries, hopes to see relations restored and further conflict avoided. He added that dialogue on equal footing could help overcome remaining challenges.
His remarks came as Cambodian and Thai foreign ministers led delegations to Yunnan province Dec. 28–29, following the signing of a joint ceasefire statement. The talks were held at Wang’s invitation.
China said it will continue to support ASEAN’s role in the peace process and expressed willingness to assist an ASEAN observation mission monitoring the truce.
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn praised China’s mediation, noting shuttle diplomacy by Beijing’s envoy helped secure the ceasefire signed by Cambodian and Thai militaries.
He said Cambodia is committed to working with Thailand to fully implement the agreement, strengthen dialogue mechanisms and build trust between the two armed forces.
Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak also welcomed China’s engagement, calling its mediation constructive.
He said the ceasefire marked a fresh starting point for bilateral relations, adding that Bangkok remains committed to resolving disputes peacefully, rebuilding trust and restoring ties.
The tripartite meeting chaired by Wang continued Monday in Yunnan for a second day of discussions.
