Phnom Penh named among BBC Travel’s Best Places to Visit in 2026
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 24, 2025) — Cambodia’s capital has been named one of BBC Travel’s 20 Best Places to Visit in 2026, underscoring growing international confidence in Phnom Penh’s tourism appeal despite tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
BBC Travel said the list was compiled with input from its global network of journalists, travel experts and sustainable tourism authorities to spotlight destinations that offer exceptional experiences while supporting local communities, protecting the environment and preserving cultural heritage.

Phnom Penh’s inclusion highlights its transformation into a rising sustainable urban tourism hub, driven by infrastructure development, creative industries and youth-led cultural revival.
BBC Travel noted the capital is “having a moment” as it prepares to open Techo International Airport, Cambodia’s largest infrastructure project. The futuristic terminal, featuring a giant silver Buddha, is expected to boost connectivity with new routes from the UAE, Turkey, China and Japan.
Once overshadowed by Siem Reap, Phnom Penh is emerging as a destination in its own right. BBC Travel cited Chaktomuk Walk Street, a pedestrianized riverfront zone that hosts weekend festivals with Khmer food, crafts and live music.
The city’s atmosphere reflects the legacy of architect Vann Molyvann, whose modernist vision shaped Phnom Penh’s skyline. His former home has reopened as a design café and mini-museum, while other landmarks are being restored by young creatives.
A new wave of Gen Z-led boutiques, distilleries and coffee shops signals a homecoming movement among young Cambodians. Visitors can sample award-winning spirits made from local botanicals, rediscover Khmer dishes once banned during wartime and explore heritage shophouse districts blending tradition with contemporary creativity.
Thourn Sinan, chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia Chapter, said Phnom Penh’s recognition reflects genuine traveler confidence. “Being named among the world’s best travel cities for 2026 is not a coincidence. Today’s travelers rely heavily on online reviews and digital platforms before choosing destinations. Phnom Penh’s strong presence on international platforms reflects satisfaction,” he said.
Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism reported 4.8 million international visitors in the first 10 months of 2025, a 44.6 percent increase year-on-year. About one million were Chinese tourists, making China the largest source market and signaling a near full recovery to pre-pandemic levels.
Other destinations on the list include Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Colchagua Valley in Chile, the Cook Islands, Costa Rica, the Hebrides in Scotland, Ishikawa in Japan, Komodo Islands in Indonesia, Loreto in Mexico, Montenegro, Oregon Coast in the United States, Oulu in Finland, Philadelphia, Guimarães in Portugal, Samburu in Kenya, Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Slocan Valley in Canada, Uluru in Australia and Uruguay.
