SEA Games 2025 Overshadowed by Officiating Disputes, Fair Play Violations and Cambodia’s Withdrawal Amid Border Tensions

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 19, 2025) — The 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Bangkok have been marred by a string of controversies — from officiating disputes and fair play violations to organizational errors and Cambodia’s dramatic withdrawal — casting a shadow over what was meant to showcase regional unity through sport.

One of the most serious incidents came when Thai e-sports athlete Naphat Warasin was expelled from the women’s Arena of Valor competition after investigators found she had used prohibited third-party software. Organizers ruled the violation severe, disqualifying Thailand’s team against Vietnam.

Officiating disputes erupted across disciplines. In Pencak Silat, Malaysia accused officials of bias toward host-nation athletes, prompting police intervention and the withdrawal of Malaysian competitors. The men’s under-65 kg final ended with Thailand’s gold medal stripped moments before the ceremony after a successful Malaysian appeal.

Vietnam also protested decisions in women’s volleyball and football. A disputed final point handed Thailand victory in volleyball on Dec. 15, while a disallowed goal in the women’s football final against the Philippines on Dec. 17 — later shown on video to be onside — fueled outrage before Vietnam lost in penalties.

Organizational errors compounded tensions, with national flags and team names misidentified during football matches.

Cambodia escalated matters further, withdrawing its entire delegation after the opening ceremony, citing safety concerns amid intensifying border clashes with Thailand. Cambodia’s National Olympic Committee accused the host nation of betraying the Olympic spirit. “Instead of opening the SEA Games, they opened a war,” said Secretary General Vath Chamroeun, calling the actions unprecedented in Olympic history.

As the Games near their closing ceremony on Dec. 20, the accumulation of disputes has raised questions about sports governance, neutrality of officiating, and the responsibility of host nations to uphold integrity and peace in regional competition.
