Russia Denies Thai Media Reports of Nationals Acting as Mercenaries in Border Conflict

BANGKOK (Dec. 16, 2025) — The Russian Embassy in Thailand has rejected reports in Thai media alleging that Russian nationals are serving as mercenaries in the ongoing border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.

In a statement, the embassy called the claims “unfounded” and said they appeared aimed at infringing on the rights of Russian citizens and undermining historically friendly relations between Russia and Thailand.

The embassy reiterated Moscow’s long‑standing position that border disputes must be resolved through peaceful means, a stance previously outlined by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in July.

The controversy over alleged foreign fighters has surfaced in Thai political and security discussions as clashes along the 817‑kilometer border have intensified.

The Royal Thai Police and provincial authorities in Nakhon Ratchasima have ordered increased surveillance of foreign nationals, including Russians, amid fears of sabotage or drone operations. No evidence of organized mercenary activity has been found.

Thai authorities have tightened immigration checks and blocked suspected mercenaries and conflict‑linked travelers from entering the country, citing national security concerns.

Officials said the measures are part of broader efforts to counter misinformation that could interfere with military operations.
