PM Anwar: Ceasefire Set for Dec. 13; ASEAN Observers to Deploy With U.S. Satellite Support

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Dec. 13, 2025) — Malaysia has proposed a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand to take effect at 10 p.m. Saturday, with an ASEAN Observer Team deploying alongside satellite monitoring provided by the United States, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced.

Anwar said the ceasefire would require both sides to halt all hostilities, including the use of force and the forward movement of armed units, amid escalating clashes along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

Following discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, Anwar said he held separate phone calls with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to convey Malaysia’s concern and urge restraint.

“To support de-escalation and promote transparency, I have requested the deployment of the ASEAN Observer Team, led by the Malaysian chief of defence forces, to monitor developments on the ground,” Anwar said in a statement.

He said the monitoring mission would be supported by U.S. satellite imagery, with both field observation and satellite monitoring commencing at the same time as the ceasefire.

Findings from the mission will be compiled by the ASEAN Observer Team and presented at an ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 16.

“The report will provide an objective account of the situation, including the positions of both parties, in the interest of accountability, confidence-building and the preservation of peace and stability in the region,” Anwar said.

Malaysia, he added, remains committed to working closely with ASEAN partners and the international community to ensure dialogue, restraint and diplomacy prevail amid the border crisis.
