Children Caught in the Fire: Cambodian Kids Plead for Help as Thai Attacks Intensify

ODDAR MEANCHEY, Cambodia (Dec. 12, 2025) — The trembling voice of a 10 year old Cambodian girl sheltering in a crowded camp has captured the heartbreak of families fleeing the sixth straight day of Thai military attacks along the border.

“When I heard the explosion, I didn’t dare run without my mother. I miss my father so much,” she said in a viral video, describing the chaos as shells struck near her school. Her father, a Cambodian soldier, has been on the front lines since July.

Another child, voice quivering, pleaded: “Please, foreign countries, help Cambodia. We don’t want war. I want to go home and see my relatives.”

Teachers echoed the fear. In Preah Vihear province, Tim Sameth said her students shook with terror as explosions hit nearby. “I pulled them into the classroom to wait for their parents. I felt so heartbroken — for them, for my own children, for all of us,” she said.

Aid groups warn the trauma may last a lifetime. Vorn Samphors of Aide et Action condemned the attacks as indiscriminate, saying tens of thousands of children are now suffering emotional breakdowns.

Cambodia’s Interior Ministry reported more than 900 schools closed, affecting 216,000 students and 7,600 teachers. Defense officials said Thai assaults have killed 11 civilians, injured 76 and displaced more than 274,000 people. Entire districts stand emptied as families flee with children on their hips and fear in their eyes.
