Cambodian Defense Official Says Forces Acting in Self Defense as Border Clashes Escalate

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 9, 2025) — A senior Cambodian defense official said Tuesday the country has “no choice” but to fight back against Thai military operations along the border, citing what Phnom Penh described as ongoing violations of a ceasefire agreement and repeated attacks.

Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, told reporters that Cambodian forces were acting in accordance with international law.

“Thai forces have carried out hostile acts without implementing the agreed principles and initiated attacks on Cambodia in recent days,” she said. “The Cambodian army has no choice but to respond in self defense, in line with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.”

She said the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces remain committed to defending national sovereignty and protecting civilians while following government directives.

Earlier Tuesday, the ministry accused Thailand of conducting overnight attacks in Pursat province, alleging breaches of the recently signed ceasefire. Officials said Thai troops carried out operations throughout the night in Military Region 5, Thmor Da commune.

Between 4:58 and 5:25 a.m., a large drone was reportedly used for surveillance over Phnom Trango, followed by what Cambodia described as a chemical smoke attack.

Authorities said Thai units then fired 105 mm artillery rounds at O’Phluk Domrei between 5:30 and 6:10, with firing continuing afterward.
