Cambodia’s Parliament Congratulates Finland on Independence Day, Highlights Growing Cooperation
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec.6,2025) — Cambodia’s National Assembly President Samdech Khuon Sudary has extended congratulations to Finland ahead of its Independence Day, celebrated annually on Dec. 6.
In a statement dated Dec. 5, Sudary conveyed her “warmest congratulations” to Finnish Parliament Speaker Jussi Halla-aho, lawmakers and the Finnish people on the 108th anniversary of Finland’s independence.
She cited the “mutual respect and shared interests” underpinning relations between the two countries and voiced confidence that cooperation, particularly between their legislatures, would continue to strengthen across bilateral and multilateral platforms.
Sudary concluded by wishing Halla-aho good health and success, and Finland continued prosperity. Diplomatic ties between Cambodia and Finland date back to 1970, with relations re-established in 1976 after a brief disruption.
Finland has supported Cambodia in education, vocational training, health, environment and trade, as well as in de-mining, land management and judicial assistance related to the country’s post-conflict legacy.
Through mechanisms such as the Fund for Local Cooperation, Finland has also backed Cambodian civil society, media, cultural institutions and human rights defenders.
In October 2022, the two countries held their first formal bilateral consultation session at the foreign-ministry level, signing a memorandum of understanding to institutionalize the mechanism.
During a farewell call in mid-2025, Finland’s outgoing ambassador reaffirmed commitments to expand cooperation across education, environment, trade, health and vocational training.
