Phnom Penh, Cambodia (Nov. 24, 2025) — Japan has voiced support for the ASEAN Observer Team, led by Malaysia, and said it will continue working with regional partners to ensure the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand is upheld.

In a statement, Tokyo said it would assist efforts to promote the “steady implementation” of the truce and contribute to wider de-escalation along the border.

On Nov. 22–23, Col. Hara Takashi, counsellor and defense attaché at the Japanese Embassy in Phnom Penh, joined a site visit organized by Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence.

The visit, conducted with the Military Attaché Corps Phnom Penh, provided updates on the latest developments at the frontier.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry press secretary, Toshihiro Kitamura, said Tokyo supported the establishment of the ASEAN observer team tasked with monitoring the ceasefire between Phnom Penh and Bangkok.

He acknowledged the diplomatic efforts of Malaysia, as ASEAN chair, and the United States in facilitating dialogue between the two neighbors.

“The improvement of relations between Cambodia and Thailand is essential for stability and development in the region,” the ministry said.

Japan added that it hoped both countries would continue to respect the ceasefire and resolve outstanding issues through dialogue. Tokyo said it remained ready to coordinate with other nations to support implementation of the truce and prevent further escalation.
