Cambodian Police Seize Hundreds of Devices in Phnom Penh Cyber-Fraud Raid
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Nov.15,2015) — Cambodian authorities seized hundreds of electronic devices during a raid on a Phnom Penh building suspected of hosting cyber-fraud operations, officials said Friday.
Security forces in Chamkarmon district confiscated 168 all-in-one desktop computers, six CPU towers, 35 monitors and about 600 mobile phones during the Nov. 14 inspection at Block E of the Yeak Thai building in Tonle Bassac commune.
The operation followed investigative reports suggesting possible involvement in online fraud, according to the National Police General Commissariat. The raid was carried out with district authorities and other agencies, in coordination with the Secretariat of the Committee for Combating Cyber Fraud.
Police said the seized equipment was linked to suspected fraud activities. The evidence has been handed over to Phnom Penh Municipal Police for legal processing.
Authorities said specialist units are continuing their investigation to identify and take action against those believed to be part of the network.
The raid is part of a nationwide campaign against cyber-fraud, with officials vowing to enforce the law “strictly and without exception” against ringleaders and others involved.
