PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Nov.14, 2025) — The United States views Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet as a “highly capable partner” in the Indo-Pacific, according to a report published Nov. 13 by Japan’s Nikkei Asia.

The article comes amid heightened tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, as Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul meets with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.

Since taking office, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has worked to recalibrate Cambodia’s foreign policy, initiating dialogue with Washington, hosting U.S. defense officials, and exploring joint initiatives such as disaster response training and peacekeeping cooperation.

The U.S. sees opportunities to deepen engagement under his leadership, particularly in regional security, military collaboration, economic investment, and diplomacy.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has also expanded Cambodia’s ties with European and Asian partners, including South Korea.

According to Nikkei Asia, Washington believes Cambodia could play a more proactive role in regional security, with closer ties expected to support the country’s economic and strategic goals.

Thong Mengdavid, a lecturer at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, said the report reflects U.S. recognition of Cambodia’s recent efforts. He noted Phnom Penh’s advocacy against online scam networks and its promotion of peace and rule-based cooperation through ASEAN and partnerships with the U.S., China, Japan, and others.

Mengdavid said shared priorities offer avenues for deeper collaboration in cybersecurity, law enforcement, anti-trafficking, maritime security, and development — all contributing to a more stable and secure Indo-Pacific.
