Cambodia plans national archive reform ahead of centennial milestone

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Nov.12, 2025) — Cambodia is preparing a major reform of its National Archives as the institution nears its 100th anniversary, aiming to modernize operations, preserve historical records and promote public access to national memory.

Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Visoth, who also chairs the National Archives Council, announced the plan during a seminar titled “Archives and National Memory: Toward the Centennial of Cambodia’s National Archives,” held Nov. 12 in Phnom Penh.

“The National Archives are not just a repository of old documents—they are a living institution and a vital source of knowledge, identity and cultural heritage,” Visoth said.

He outlined a five-year strategic framework (2024–2028) focused on digital transformation, infrastructure upgrades, and the development of new archival standards. The plan includes 10 priority strategies to improve management, conservation and accessibility of archival materials.

Visoth said the reforms will help attract researchers, strengthen national identity and support Cambodia’s development goals. The archives currently house over 2,000 linear meters of records, including maps, architectural plans, royal decrees, photographs and newspapers—about 80% in French and the rest in Khmer and other languages.

Founded in 1926, the National Archives of Cambodia hold rare documents spanning colonial and contemporary history. The government is also partnering with the Khmer Rouge Tribunal archives to integrate international best practices.
