Experts Praise Trump’s Role in Cambodia–Thailand Peace Accord

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct.30, 2025) — Regional experts are hailing U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim for their pivotal roles in brokering the landmark peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, signed in Kuala Lumpur on October 26.

Chheang Vannarith, founder and chairman of the Angkor Social Innovation Park, called President Trump a “decisive actor” in the process. “Donald Trump is the key decisive actor here,” he said. “He personally committed to the peace deal.”

Vannarith described the accord as a major milestone in restoring peace and normalcy between the two neighbors, but stressed that its success depends on mutual trust, a strong ASEAN observer mandate, and international oversight.

Political analyst Kin Phea echoed the praise, crediting Trump’s involvement in both the July 28 ceasefire and the final agreement.

“This peace agreement is a significant step toward peace and demonstrates President Trump’s determination to bring stability to Cambodia, Thailand, and the region,” he said.

Phea urged Thailand to implement the deal in good faith, noting its importance for Cambodia—a country that has long prioritized peace after decades of conflict.

The Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration was signed by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and witnessed by President Trump and Prime Minister Anwar, who currently chairs ASEAN.

Calling the moment “historic,” Hun Manet thanked Trump for his “decisive leadership and steadfast commitment” and pledged Cambodia’s full cooperation to ensure the agreement delivers lasting peace and prosperity.
