Japan Welcomes Outcome of Cambodia-Thailand Border Talks

TOKYO, Japan (Oct.23, 2025) — Japan welcomed the outcome of the General Border Committee meeting between Cambodia and Thailand, held Oct. 23 in Malaysia, which focused on steps to normalize relations between the two countries.

Japanese Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Toshihiro Kitamura said Tokyo supports the decision to establish an ASEAN observer team to help implement and monitor the ceasefire agreement between Phnom Penh and Bangkok.

Kitamura also expressed Japan’s appreciation for the diplomatic efforts of all parties involved, including the United States and Malaysia, the current ASEAN chair, for facilitating dialogue between the neighbors.

“The improvement of relations between Cambodia and Thailand is essential for stability and development in the region,” the ministry said in a statement.

Japan said it hopes both countries will continue to honor the ceasefire and resolve tensions peacefully through dialogue. Tokyo pledged to work with other nations to support the ceasefire’s implementation and help de-escalate the situation.

Cambodia and Thailand reaffirmed their commitment to peace and cooperation during the 2nd General Border Committee meeting, signing key agreements to strengthen border stability.

According to statement, the 2nd Special General Border Committee (GBC) meeting between Cambodia and Thailand took place on October 23, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The session was co-chaired by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Tea Seiha and Thai Defense Minister Gen. Nattaphon Nakphanit. The meeting concluded with both sides signing the Joint Agreed Minutes and a Joint Statement, signaling a renewed commitment to implementing previous agreements and enhancing bilateral cooperation.
