Cambodia’s Funan Techo Canal Project Advances Toward Excavation Phase, Launch Roots Highlight Strategic Vision
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct. 22, 2025) — Cambodia’s ambitious Funan Techo Canal Project remains on schedule, with excavation work expected to begin in late November or early December, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

Ministry spokesman Phorn Rim said the project is currently in the land surveying and resettlement compensation phase, led by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in coordination with technical teams and local authorities.
“The Funan Techo Canal is a historic national project and a major step in transforming Cambodia’s waterway and maritime transport landscape,” Phan said.
The canal was officially launched in August 05, 2024 under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet, who emphasized its strategic importance for national development and regional connectivity.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held in Takeo province, marked the beginning of what is considered one of the largest infrastructure undertakings in Cambodia’s history.
The current focus is on Section 2 of the canal, which runs through Kandal province. Teams are conducting structural impact assessments in Koh Thom district, including evaluations of homes and farmland.
Officials have been engaging with residents through public forums and collecting thumbprints to ensure transparency and community involvement. The Funan Techo Canal, marking a major milestone in the country’s infrastructure development.
The 180-kilometer canal will connect the Mekong River to the sea through four provinces—Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep—enabling two-way navigation for vessels up to 3,000 DWT.
Backed by a $1.156 billion investment under a Build-Operate-Transfer model, the project is expected to reduce shipping costs, improve logistics efficiency, and enhance national security.
Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized its strategic importance during the launch, while authorities pledged fair compensation and community engagement for affected residents along the canal route.
