The meeting, held at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, focused on easing tensions between Cambodia and Thailand and promoting peaceful cooperation across Southeast Asia. Delegates pledged to uphold the peaceful settlement of disputes, reject the use of force and respect international law.

In his opening remarks, Sokhonn thanked Malaysia and the United States for their constructive role in facilitating dialogue. He stressed the importance of fully implementing ceasefire agreements under the General Border Committee, Regional Border Committee and Joint Boundary Commission frameworks.

“Cambodia knows all too well the devastating consequences of war,” Sokhonn said. “We harbor no desire to take what is not ours, but we will not accept losing what rightfully belongs to us.”

He called for a fair, impartial and rules-based solution to ensure lasting peace.
Sokhonn also outlined priority measures recently agreed upon by Cambodia and Thailand, including the removal of heavy weapons, humanitarian demining, combating transnational crime, managing border-area settlements and countering disinformation.

He reaffirmed Cambodia’s readiness to work with Thailand “as permanent neighbors” to restore peace and prosperity between their peoples.
