Cambodia Urges Nuclear Disarmament, Warns of AI in Warfare at UN

UNITED NATIONS (Oct.11,2025) — Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation while raising concerns about the military use of artificial intelligence during a speech at the United Nations on Oct. 10.

Ambassador Mao Tithiarun, deputy permanent representative of Cambodia to the U.N., delivered the remarks during the General Debate of the First Committee on Disarmament and International Security at the 80th session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

Tithiarun emphasized Cambodia’s dedication to promoting international peace and security through disarmament efforts and expressed concern over the growing role of AI technologies in warfare.

He also highlighted Cambodia’s full implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use of Anti-Personnel Mines and its active participation in global and regional cooperation, including the deployment of Cambodian demining forces in U.N. peacekeeping missions.

In September, Cambodia’s National Assembly unanimously approved a draft law ratifying the Additional Protocol to the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone, known as SEANWFZ.

Lawmakers said the approval demonstrates Cambodia’s firm commitment to regional and global peace.​ Officials described the ratification as a significant step toward maintaining Southeast Asia as a region free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, underscoring Cambodia’s commitment to peace, regional stability and global security.
