Cambodia Urges Global Financial Support for Forest Protection and Climate Action

NEW YORK (Sept.24, 2025) — Cambodia has called on the international community to provide innovative financing for forest protection, climate resilience, and sustainable development in local communities, Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth said Tuesday.

Speaking on behalf of Prime Minister Hun Manet at the opening session of the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) Dialogue, Sophalleth emphasized that natural resources are vital not only for climate action but also for biodiversity conservation and livelihood improvement.

The event, hosted by Brazil, was held during Climate Week at the 80th United Nations General Assembly.

Sophalleth reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to forest conservation, noting that it is fully integrated into the country’s climate and development strategies, including its Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), submitted to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Cambodia has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 55% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Sophalleth also voiced strong support for the TFFF initiative, which will be a key focus at the COP30 Climate Summit in Belém, Brazil, this November.

He said Cambodia is ready to work with friendly nations and development partners to ensure the success of the initiative, which aligns with the country’s Environmental Sectoral Strategy and the Pentagon Strategy led by Hun Manet.

The TFFF, proposed by Brazil, aims to mobilize up to $4 billion annually for tropical forest countries, with funding directed toward conservation efforts and community-based development.
