Cambodian Lawmakers Approve Nuclear-Free Zone Protocol
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Sept.15, 2025) — The National Assembly of Cambodia on Monday unanimously approved a draft law ratifying the Additional Protocol to the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ).
The legislation, comprising three articles, was passed following detailed legislative procedures and debate. Lawmakers said the unanimous vote reflected broad national consensus on the importance of the treaty.
The ratification marks a significant step in maintaining Southeast Asia as a region free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. Cambodian officials said the move underscores the country’s commitment to peace, regional stability and global security.
“This approval is a clear demonstration of Cambodia’s firm dedication to regional and global peace,” the Assembly said in a statement.
The protocol also reinforces Cambodia’s support for international non-proliferation efforts and aligns with the region’s shared goals of safety, diplomacy and sustainable development.
