Analyst: Thai Media Amplifying Exiled Cambodian Opposition Amid Border Tensions

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Sept. 3, 2025) — Cambodian analysts are raising concerns over Thai media’s increased amplification of exiled opposition figures, particularly Sam Rainsy, during and after the recent five-day border clash between Cambodia and Thailand.

Following the announcement of an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire,” Thai media outlets — both domestic and international — have repeatedly quoted and promoted statements from Cambodia’s overseas opposition. Analysts say this trend is part of a psychological campaign aimed at undermining the morale of Cambodian soldiers, sowing confusion within the military, and pressuring the government to release sensitive information.

Reports indicate that the Thai military is using internal psychological tactics, with Military Region 2 commanders and Sam Rainsy jointly calling for the Cambodian government to disclose casualty figures, damage assessments, and territorial status.

“This is not just political rhetoric — it’s psychological warfare,” said Yong Pov, secretary-general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia. “It’s being used to justify territorial advances and provoke instability, even after the ceasefire.”

Pov criticized Sam Rainsy’s alignment with Thai narratives, calling it “regressive politics” at a time when Thailand is viewed as the aggressor. “Thailand has attacked Cambodia, displaced civilians, and killed our soldiers. Aligning with that narrative is seen as collusion with a foreign power,” he said.

He added that while opposition groups may intend to challenge the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, Thailand is no longer just a political rival — it is acting as an adversary to the Cambodian nation and its people.

“Everyone can see Thailand’s ambition to invade Cambodia,” Pov said. “Sam Rainsy’s satisfaction with being quoted by Thai media should not be celebrated. He is aiding the enemy.”

Pov warned that unless Rainsy and his group reconsider their actions, history will record their betrayal. “This is not a proud moment. The public now widely sees him as conspiring with the enemy.”

Government spokesperson Pen Bona echoed the criticism, saying Rainsy’s recent actions reflect “clear treason and an intent to destroy the nation,” drawing condemnation both domestically and abroad.

“He continues to spread false, divisive information,” Pen said. “Meanwhile, the Cambodian People’s Party government — under former Prime Minister Hun Sen and current Prime Minister Hun Manet — has sacrificed everything to protect the nation and its people during times of crisis.”
