Cambodian envoy underscores sovereignty stance at Tokyo event

TOKYO, Mar 18, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s ambassador designate to Japan, Chum Sounry, has delivered a strong message on national sovereignty while reaffirming support for the Cambodian community in Japan at the inauguration of the Cambodian Association in Japan (CAJ).
Speaking at the ceremony, attended by representatives of 26 Japanese and Cambodian companies and organisations, Sounry underscored Cambodia’s firm position on protecting territorial integrity.
He conveyed greetings from Senate President Hun Sen, Prime Minister Hun Manet and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, before praising the establishment of the CAJ.
Sounry commended CAJ President Hay Vanna and his team for strengthening economic ties, promoting investment and fostering unity among Cambodians in Japan.
He also used the occasion to address rising tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border, pointing to recent protests lodged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He said Cambodia rejects unlawful activities by Thai armed forces and will not tolerate attempts to alter borders by force, stressing sovereignty must be respected.
On broader relations, Sounry noted Cambodia and Japan enjoy a strong partnership under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework, built on decades of cooperation in peacebuilding, economic development and people to people exchanges.
