Cluster bomb blast kills one, injures another in Cambodia
PHNOM PENH, March 20, 2026 (KPT) — An unexploded cluster munition left behind from past border clashes with Thailand detonated in Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province this week, killing one man and seriously injuring another, officials said Friday.

The blast occurred on March 19 in Boeung Snao village, Slakram commune, Svay Chek district. Authorities said a 42-year-old man died instantly, while a 47-year-old man sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital. Based on shrapnel evidence, experts identified the device as an M46 submunition from a 155mm NR269 projectile.

The Cambodia Mine Action Centre (CMAC) warned that remnants of war continue to threaten lives, safety and development. Officials urged residents to exercise extreme caution, avoid suspected areas and immediately report mines, cluster bombs or suspicious objects to local authorities or nearby demining teams.
CMAC has repeatedly appealed to villagers, especially those returning to conflict-affected areas, not to touch unexploded ordnance and to seek guidance from authorities before entering areas suspected of contamination.
