Cambodia approves $2.50 travel allowance for garment workers

PHNOM PENH, March 21, 2026 (KPT)- Cambodia will provide garment workers with a temporary monthly travel allowance of $2.50 starting in April, aimed at easing transport costs as global fuel prices surge.
The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the National Minimum Wage Council, chaired by Labour Minister Heng Sour.
The council, with equal representation from government, employers and unions, endorsed the measure as an addition to existing factory support for travel and accommodation.
The subsidy covers workers in the textile, garment, footwear and travel goods sectors – industries that drive Cambodia’s exports – and will remain until fuel prices stabilise.
Union representatives welcomed the move, praising government efforts to secure fuel supplies and reduce import taxes, while thanking employers for cooperating to ease workers’ burdens.
Minister Heng Sour said the agreement highlighted tripartite cooperation between the state, employers and transport providers, adding it reflected Cambodia’s ability to maintain industrial stability while safeguarding productivity and exports.
