Cambodia welcomes Vietnamese officers to ASEAN observer mission

PHNOM PENH, March 30, 2026 (KPT) – Two Vietnamese military officers have arrived in Cambodia to join a regional observer mission monitoring the border with Thailand, the defence ministry said Sunday.
Spokeswoman Lieutenant General Maly Socheata said Colonel Ngo Xuan Truong and Lieutenant Colonel Bui Xuan Duong landed at Techo International Airport on March 29.
They will serve with the ASEAN Observer Team, currently led by the Philippines as chair of the regional bloc.
The mission is tasked with observing and reporting on conditions along the frontier following a ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.
The government said it fully supports the team’s work, stressing that the presence of international observers promotes transparency, accountability and trust between the two sides.
Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to agreements reached with Bangkok, including a joint statement from December 2025 and a peace accord signed in October that year.
The efforts aim to restore normal conditions along the border and ensure lasting stability.
