PHNOM PENH, March 31, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia said Tuesday it is pressing diplomatic efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and citizens amid renewed tensions along the frontier with Thailand.

Government spokesman Pen Bona told reporters that protecting the country’s territorial integrity and people remained the administration’s “highest priority.”

He cited recent developments along the border, including displaced residents unable to return home due to barriers such as containers and barbed wire installed by Thai forces.

Cambodia is seeking a peaceful resolution in line with bilateral agreements, including a joint statement signed on December 27, 2025, Bona said.

The spokesman reiterated Phnom Penh’s position on the internationally recognised boundary, based on demarcations established by the Franco-Siamese Boundary Commission, and consistent with international law, including the principle of uti possidetis juris.

“Cambodia does not recognise any changes to the border resulting from the use of force,” he added.
Earlier this week, the foreign ministry urged Thailand to resume technical negotiations through the Joint Boundary Commission, stressing its commitment to international law and peaceful settlement.

The ministry pointed to a December 2025 meeting of the General Border Committee, which called for the resumption of survey and demarcation work.
