Cambodia Pledges Action on Hunger at ASEAN Parliamentary Meeting

PHNOM PENH, April 1, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling hunger and strengthening food security across Southeast Asia during a regional parliamentary meeting in Jakarta, officials said Wednesday.
The discussions, held March 30 under the ASEAN Inter Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), formed part of preparations for the Global Parliamentary Summit in South Africa this June.
The meeting was organised by the AIPA Secretariat, led by Chhem Widhya, in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, and brought together lawmakers from across the region.
Cambodia was represented by Pan Sorasak, a senior National Assembly member, who outlined the country’s approach to addressing hunger and malnutrition.
He highlighted three priorities: ensuring access to food through inclusive policies, building resilient agri food systems to withstand climate change and external shocks, and promoting public health through safer food systems and healthier diets backed by legislation.
Delegates also discussed a proposed global reporting mechanism to track progress and improve accountability, enabling parliaments to share experiences and strengthen cooperation.
Representatives from Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Timor Leste concluded the meeting with a joint pledge to eliminate hunger and malnutrition at regional and global levels.
Officials said the initiative reflects growing recognition that food security is central to peace, stability and sustainable development, and that parliamentary cooperation will be vital in meeting global nutrition targets.
