Cambodia-Laos border stability ‘driving development’, says Sudary

PHNOM PENH, April 2, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s National Assembly President Khuon Sudary said peace and stability along the Cambodia-Laos border are creating strong opportunities for development in both countries, officials said Wednesday.
She made the remarks during a meeting in Phnom Penh on April 1 with a delegation from Laos’ State Audit Organization, led by Viengthavisone Thephachanh.
Sudary highlighted the long-standing ties between the two nations, describing the relationship as one of “good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and long-term sustainability.”
She said such cooperation was vital amid global uncertainty, urging smaller countries to strengthen multilateralism to safeguard territorial integrity.
She noted that border demarcation between Cambodia and Laos is nearly complete, calling it a “border of peace, friendship, cooperation and development.” Both sides aim to raise bilateral trade to $700 million by 2030.
Sudary also stressed the importance of ASEAN unity, saying regional cooperation was key to maintaining stability and prosperity.
The Lao delegation praised Cambodia’s recent development, including new transport infrastructure and urban expansion.
Talks also focused on strengthening cooperation between audit institutions, with Sudary underscoring the role of effective auditing in promoting good governance, transparency and investor confidence.
